The SOWEGA MODEL BOATERS hosted the first of four
Grand Prix races at our site in Sycamore Ga.Feb. 21, 22 2004.
We had a total of 52 boats entered
in 11 classes and we had 5 rounds of heat exciting racing.
Saturday the weather was windy, cool, and the water
was rough.....
Sunday we had clear skies and smooth perfect water.
Racing was fierce and wild in each race.
Rick English's mono spent saturday night resting on
the bottom of the pond after being T-BONED by the owner of the pond. I won't mention any names.....
This race was also marked with a few oddities......Noman
Morton running offshore which he never does and Steve Lawson our offshore director not running offshore which he always does.
Another bright spot at the race was 11
year old Matthew Proepper competing with the big boys in the nine boat field of 23-30 cc LSG Cat. Matthew finished 3rd. and I am sure we haven't heard the last from him.
If you have never been
to a Grand Prix race you owe it to yourself to try one. The race is laid back and you
will meet some of the nicest people in the sport.
It is amazing to see how many of your competitors
will loan you parts and help set up or work on your boat just so you won't miss a heat race.
I would like to thank the club members for all of
thier hard work to put this event together, and a special thanks to all of the competitors for taking time to come race with
us.
I hope to see all of you at our August Grand Prix
race.
see ya!
Rick Bearden
